  1. Lock and keys are devices that provide 
  2. security, usually fitted to a door of some 
  3. kind. In 1778 English locksmith Robert 
  4. Barron made the forerunner of the mortise 
  5. lock, which contains levers that the key must 
  6. raise to an exact height before the bolt can 
  7. be moved. The Yale lock, a pin-tumbler 
  8. cylinder design, was invented by US locksmith 
  9. Linus Yale, Jr, in 1865. In later years more
  10. secure locks were invented, such as 
  11. combination locks.
